TRIAC of Privacy and the Internet

On the Internet people are using data all the time and this data can be collected and shared easily. The biggest concern with this collection and sharing of personal data is the lack of privacy as personal information is spread around and can be taken easily by anyone. For example, in “Privacy and the Internet,” journalist Ellen Kennerly states that consumers have no right to stop companies from sharing their data with affiliates, but can stop them from sharing with third parties although few people have done this since policies are hard to understand or misleading. This statement from Kennerly shows that online people’s data is being spread and that companies have been given the right to break into one’s privacy to collect and share information. People have a right to privacy, but it is not being given by online companies or the government in the United States. This breach of privacy is done by all companies and the United States has done little to stop this lack of privacy and threats of being hacked, meanwhile other countries have already produced methods of stopping this problem. Kennerly’s statement exemplifies this problem in the United States as companies are taking people’s data and giving it away or selling it with the people being utterly clueless until they find out that key information about their identity has been stolen. An effort needs to be made in the United States to stop this breach of privacy and protect one’s online data from being spread to others in a very simple way that makes sense to everyone.

    Hi Andrew,
I noticed in your analysis, you summarize, in your own words, what Kennerly is stating and I think its also nice integration of metacommentary. You restate how we, consumers, have a right to privacy but it is not given to us by these companies or the government in the US, drawing light on what you had mentioned before as being the main issue with the internet. With that being said, you also compare the United States with other countries to show how much of an issue it is in our lives and I think that specific part of the paragraph is a very effective method of metacommentary because it gives us with more clarification on your opinion while also exposing us to the “so what?” aspect. Your diction in the last sentence is also a great example of sufficiently incorporating metacommentary as it further guides us to what your main idea is but also includes a plea for what needs to occur in order to deal with the issue. I think you did a very good job in this paragraph in guiding us specifically to what you were arguing!
